Frequently asked questions.

Why therapy?

Depending on your upbringing, beliefs, and exposure to mental health issues and services, many people may have different perspectives about how to deal with life’s challenges. For some, they seek guidance from spirituality or religion; others look for answers within themselves or seek support from friends or family members; still others may visit medical doctors looking for a physical “problem” and relevant solution. Therapy is but one more method, a place or process where one can go to lessen the stress from life’s difficulties and increase happiness, peace, and life satisfaction. Therapy is simply an opportunity to learn more about oneself, build resilience and contentment, and deal with any challenges that may have presented throughout one’s life.

How long does therapy last?

For lack of a more satisfying answer, it depends. Each individual, presenting concern, and other life factors (e.g., finances, work/school, family demands) make it difficult to define a specific length of treatment. Frequently, individuals and families see significant success after working with a therapist for six to twelve months, as it may take time to develop the therapeutic relationship, understand underlying issues, and practice effective coping skills. Treatment may be shorter or longer based on your needs and interest in ongoing participation.

How does it work?

Therapy offers individuals and families a safe place to process thoughts and feelings without judgment. In our everyday lives, we often internalize, push down, and ignore any negative experiences, thoughts, or feelings. By allowing someone else to bear witness to our pain or challenges, we often find that we can better handle any difficulties we may face. Additionally, therapy may provide us with important feedback regarding aspects of ourselves or our concerns that we may not be able to see initially ourselves. With this insight, and some new coping skills, we may be able to resolve our difficulties and increase life satisfaction.

  • For self-pay services, you are entitled to a Good Faith Estimate explaining how much your medical and mental health care will cost. You can ask your healthcare provider for a Good Faith Estimate before you schedule a service. If you receive a bill that is at least $400 more than your Good Faith Estimate, you can dispute the bill. Make sure to save a copy of your Good Faith Estimate. For questions or more information about your rights to a Good Faith Estimate, visit www.cms.gov/nosurprises.
